SVAVA CARLSEN, PRESIDENT
Mind-Body Solutions(tm),
Makers of ETERNAL WOMAN Body Balancing Crème.
Six weeks before the birth of her first child in 1998, Svava Carlsen got the devastating news: Her grandmother-the woman for whom she had been named and who had raised her in her native Iceland-had been diagnosed with breast cancer at age 64. The news devastated the 28 year-old and it galvanized her to do something with her life-long interest in medicine and alternative therapies. Soon after receiving the phone call from Rejkavik, Svava found herself in a health food store near her home in Agoura Hills, California, frenziedly reading everything she could about wellness and health therapies for women.
"I just had to do something my grandmother," she said. "I didn't know what it was right then, but it didn't take long for me to find out." Thanks to the health food store, Svava found herself devouring Dr. John Lee's first book, What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause, and his second book, co-written with Dr. Jesse Hanley, titled What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause.
"I read the first book in about two hours," she said. "I knew then that my Grandmother's health could be helped with a progesterone cream." She also discovered a great deal about how a woman's health and general wellness were dependent on her hormones and how lifestyle and environment affected their balance in women of all ages. Svava bought an off-the-shelf cream for her grandmother and invited her to visit California once the baby was born. Within days of Svava's grandmother's arrival, wan and suffering the effects of powerful chemotherapy drugs, the older woman started using the progesterone cream her ganddaughter had procured.
The elder Mrs. Carlsen had been suffering menopausal symptoms for sometime before her cancer diagnosis. The drugs, her state of mind and her illness had magnified these symptoms. Sleeping in the spare room in Svava's home, Mrs. Carlsen would often soak the sheets with sweat at night; pace the house unable to sleep and then be exhausted and listless during the day. Mrs. Carlsen would also burst into tears for no reason, and often appeared confused and unable to think logically.
Within a couple of weeks using a natural progesterone cream, the difference in my grandmother was amazing," Svava says. "After just 3-days with the cream, my grandmother's hot flashes were nearly gone. She could sleep through the night and didn't soak the sheets in sweat. Within about 10 days, my grandmother had her emotions under control. She could hold a conversation, and there was no more crying. I got my grandmother back."
After watching the astounding effects of the progesterone cream on her grandmother, Svava realized she had discovered her purpose in life. She convinced husband, Paul Dias, a venture capitalist and former commodities trader, to help finance her research into a newer, better formulation for natural progesterone cream.
During the research phase in 1998, Svava started to work with top homeopaths and herbalists and use the latest medical research into natural hormone therapy. She also met and found a supporter in Dr. Jesse Hanley, a family physician who is Medical Director for the Malibu Health Center and who co-authored the pre-menopause book with Dr. John Lee. With support from her husband, from Dr. Hanley, and from Pamela Serure, a former patient of Dr. Hanley's, Svava founded Mind-Body Solutions(tm), which was created in early 1999.
"In my research, I found that most of the so called 'natural' progesterone creams currently available off-the-shelf contained far too much phyto-estrogen. I just wasn't happy with the levels of progesterone and estrogen in any of the formulations I found," explained Svava. She set about looking for the right formula. Within months, Svava and her husband learned of a top homeopathic researcher who had been developing a high-progesterone, low-phyto estrogen formula for nearly 5 years. This unique formula for ETERNAL WOMAN Body Balancing Crème is available only from Mind-Body Solutions. "ETERNAL WOMAN is exactly what I wanted for my grandmother, and it is exactly what I wanted to create for all the other women out there who need a purer, totally natural progesterone cream formula. The phyto-estrogen content is the lowest of anything else on the market," Svava states.
Sadly, Svava's grandmother died in a hospital in Iceland from a lung infection just weeks after her granddaughter's fledgling company began making ETERNAL WOMAN Body Balancing Crème. Mrs. Carlsen was using her granddaughter's formulation right until the end. When she died, Mrs. Carlsen was free of breast cancer and most symptoms of menopause.
Svava Carlsen's jump from wife and mother to president of her own firm that specializes in educating women about natural means to wellness, and producing ETERNAL WOMAN Body Balancing Crème was a not as big a step as one might think. Svava has always been interested in alternative medical therapy. Born in Iceland and raised mainly by her grandmother, Svava graduated college in Rejkavik with a degree in Biology and intended to become a doctor.
"I guess I never really trusted doctors or hospitals. I've always liked alternative medicine and I suppose that's why I wanted to be a doctor. I wanted to be able to the kind of doctor who practiced Western medicine in a holistic way and could also use alternative therapies to help people," Svava explained. When she got the opportunity to study Italian in Italy Svava admits she got distracted from her medical dreams for a chance to live in the country her mother and step-father adored. "By going to Italy, I really got to step in to my mother's dream. It was a chance I couldn't pass up," she said.
Just as well she didn't.
While at language school, Svava met her future husban, American Paul Dias, who was there on business. They married in 1993 and the couple moved to California where Paul started a commodities trading company. Svava returned to school part-time the first year and took pre-med classes at Loyola Marymount University. She also ran her husband's office and discovered a talent for business. When Svava learned she was pregnant with Johann, the couple's son, she found herself examining her medical knowledge and beliefs more closely.
"Getting pregnant put me right in the middle of everything that made me dislike Western medicine," Svava explained. Soon after she learned about her grandmother's cancer, and right before she was to give birth, Svava decided against delivering with her HMO-assigned obstetrician. "All he could do was complain about the HMO and talk about himself and all the things that could go wrong in a pregnancy," Svava said. She also attended a "baby expo" and was horrified to find that most of the mothers-to-be, and the majority of the exhibitors were convinced the hospital was the only place to give birth.
"I couldn't believe how women here have been made to think that their doctors have all the answers and that they must be at a hospital to give birth. Where I grew up, we don't believe that," she said. Throughout her pregnancy, Svava had carefully controlled her diet and had exercised. When her former obstetrician had prescribed artificial supplements, Svava found natural sources for the same vitamins, minerals and nutritional support. She kept herself and her baby healthy by carefully preparing nutritious, organic foods and reading everything she could on the subject. Using a friend's referral, Svava and her husband, Paul, found a licensed California midwife and delivered their healthy son at home.
"In Western Medicine, we are so sophisticated in our medical thinking and so enamored of our technology that we seem to forget that there are natural sources of healing," Svava explained. "I wanted to create a natural progesterone cream that would not cause any allergic reactions, and wouldn't cause an estragenic effect. Many supposed progesterone creams also contain high levels of estrogen which will mask or covers up the unpleasant pre-menopause and menopause symptoms, but doesn't help to eliminate them. This is known as the estragenic effect and is the main reason why doctors prescribe Estrogen Replacement Therapy (ERT) to their patients with menopausal, or pre-menopausal symptoms. Estrogen, without progesterone, is not a natural method of healing. It's also dangerous and linked to cancer."
