JESSE LYNN HANLEY, M.D."I studied medicine to save my own life. Now a large part of my work is teaching self-esteem before attempting to heal anything physical."
- Dr. Jesse Hanley.Jesse Hanley is a woman's woman, a lover of life, world class physician, best-selling author and is radiantly wise beyond her 50 years. While embodying and practicing the medical wisdom of the West, Jesse embraces Eastern modalities that together help her to address her patients as whole beings. Unlike many of her contemporaries, whose time and talents are strangled by the constraints of the insurance system and dazzled by modern pharmaceuticals, Jesse claims her life purpose is to simply empower people. She spends real time with her patients, listening, sometimes for hours. And, then appropriately, she pours forth her wisdom, carefully enunciating an eloquent, yet simple stream of personalized feedback. She finds joy in her work. Her goal is to provide the community with enough information so that they no longer need her. She walks her talk by living a life true to her inner nature, taking care to love herself through her own personal challenges. Yet still, something about Jesse sets her apart from the run-of-the-mill doctor, neighbor, woman. It's the combination of all this that attracts her luminary and celebrity clients, some of whom come from as far away as Singapore.
A native of Chicago, Jesse's career in wellness was inspired by her own challenges with a chronic disease. While in her 20's, she cured herself with self-taught natural healing methods. "I was one of those sick kids," the tanned, blue eyed doctor says, "I was the one who was always excused from playing sports during school. At one point, I just became sick and tired of being sick and tired and took responsibility for my own healing."
A self-proclaimed "barefoot doctor" and child of the 1960's, Jesse spent her youth mastering alternative therapies such as massage, yoga and nutrition. Combined with her natural affinity and comprehension of science, she eventually decided that a medical career would quench her thirst for helping others to love themselves to health the way she did for herself.
At the age of 29, Jesse entered medical school at the University of Illinois. Determined to expand her education beyond that, she attended UCLA Medical School focusing on Eastern medical methods, becoming certified in the arts of acupuncture, Oriental Medicine and Polarity Therapy.
Although she is a family physician, Jesse is passionate about working with women. She co-wrote a best-selling book with Dr. John Lee titled What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Pre-Menopause and lectures on the subject of PMS, menopause, nutrition, rejuvenation and longevity. Jesse speaks out on the dangers of solely relying on pharmaceuticals to ease our pains and cure our diseases. She takes an approach that begins with building her patient's self esteem so they can participate in the healing process that may include appropriate medications, nutrition and exercise programs. She endorses a natural progesterone cream called ETERNAL WOMAN that is used to balance PMS and menopausal symptoms.
Encapsulating her purpose and attitude, Jesse is currently writing her second book titled 8 Steps on Loving Yourself to Health. "I find that working from the inside out is truly the only way to heal women. As females, we tend to embody our external experiences, which eventually shows up as physical ailments. We hold a lot of negativity inside our bodies, whereas men are much better at allowing external circumstances to roll off their back, per se. " A third book is also in the works, titled Healing Stories My Patients Have Told Me.
A proactive educator, Jesse is interested in reaching out to younger women on the fast career track. "Women in their 20's and 30's are often moving through life at such a furious pace," says Jesse, "that they are burning out their adrenal glands; this causes their bodies move into menopause much sooner than expected." She reaches these women through a series of workshops about alternative health and life choices presented at various schools and resorts throughout the U.S.
"I think that women's changes and emotions have been terribly reflected in today's society," she smiles knowingly. "I teach women that PMS is a goddess gift; it's a time of the month, either historically or 'her-storically,' when women become much more intuitive. It's an important time of increased sensitivity. Women might have a different attitude about menopausal symptoms if they knew that hot flashes burn fat! I've heard of a study that showed that waitresses actually make more money during the receptive, sensitive time of PMS."
During her eighteen-year private practice, her last twelve have been as Medical Director of Malibu Health Center. She has been recognized on several occasions for her outstanding contributions to the holistic medical community and was the health expert on "Wake Up America" on KFOX Radio. She was the associate editor of the Malibu Health Styles newsletter, writing a monthly column and was president of the Malibu Medical Society for two years. She created the Malibu Disaster and Preparedness Committee with the Red Cross and the City of Malibu. Jesse has been interviewed on numerous radio and television programs and was featured on the cover of Alternative Medicine Digest's "Women's Health" issue.
Jesse lives in Malibu, California with her American Eskimo dog, Punam, and counts horseback riding among her favorite pastimes. A passionate gardener, she recently lost a battle to grow an entirely organic garden, but continues to nurture her roses and vegetables in a way that makes them flourish and makes her smile.
