Descended from a wild vine
present in the area when the Romans invaded Gaul, the Pinot Noir is thought to
be the first wild vine domesticated for cultivation by man; indeed, the name "Pinot,"
suggestive of its pine-cone shaped clusters, was in use as early as the fourth
century. There is no vine more difficult than the fragile Pinot Noir. It mutates
easily, having spawned hundreds of clones, and is susceptible to frost and humidity.
While fairly widely planted, it has never travelled very successfully, and nowhere
does it attain the greatness it achieves in Burgundy. A cool climate is essential
to allow this early-ripener to remain on the vine until the complexity of the
fruit has developed and the soils have lent their nuance and complexity to the
chemical makeup of the grape.
The thin clay and chalk soils of Burgundy give Pinot Noir a unique character:
a distinct earthiness married to fruit sweetness with a red-berry fragrance very
typical of the grape. Pinot Noir's power and complexity are elegant and subtle
rather than hard and massive, and because it is less difficult to drink when young
than many great reds, Pinot Noir is sometimes thought to be short-lived, though
the great Burgundies of this century disprove such a fallacy.
Pinot Noir Jadot is a pure varietal wine produced from Pinot Noir musts and wines
selected from village-level vineyard sites throughout the Côte d'Or and Côte Chalonnaise.
As with several of their smaller wines, Maison Louis Jadot practices a "réplis"
to improve the quality of the wine by declassifying some wines of higher appellation
to be incorporated into the blend. The final lots are carefully chosen, and, depending
on the vintage, aged for a number of months in oak casks to evoke the clean, ripe
red berry flavors and earthiness of the grape mellowed by a subtle touch of wood.
Reflective of the Jadot style, Pinot Noir Jadot is harmonious and balanced, with
a plump fruitiness and silky texture offset by round, gentle tannins in a wine
of medium body and elegant structure. The very typical, fragrant varietal bouquet
is complemented by a delicious, lingering finish.
