SETTING THE STAGE
Be sure to appeal to all five senses. Most hosts are so wrapped up in
cooking that they forget about ambiance. Sight, smell, sound, and touch are just
as important as taste when it comes to entertaining.
Fragrant
candles, bowls of potpourri, and fresh flowers transform an ordinary setting into
an extraordinary one. One caveat: Aromatic candles are perfect in bathrooms, living
rooms, and foyers, but keep them off the dinner table. There’s nothing worse than
being overwhelmed with vanilla or cinnamon when you’re eating.
Invest
in a few inexpensive dimmer switches and lots of candles. A room aglow with candles
and soft lighting creates a warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere. It’s also the most
flattering light for your guests.
Music is
the ultimate moodmaker. If you have a CD changer, program a variety of CDs for random
play, so you won’t have to worry about changing the music. You’ll want something
lively and upbeat like 1950s lounge music for the cocktail hour to help conversation
along, and more subdued and instrumental music during dinner. To conclude, try some
light opera or Billy Holiday for dessert and coffee. Keep the music playing from
the moment guests arrive until the door closes behind them.
And then,
of course, relax and enjoy yourself. Happy entertaining!
