Teams Up With Rob Reiner's Proposition 10 For
The American Cancer Society
Invited Guests Include Prop 10 Supporters Steven Spielberg, Michael Douglas, Charlton Heston, Robin Williams, David Geffen, Dustin Hoffman, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and Pat BooneLos Angeles, CA, September 28, 1998 ~ On October 18th hundreds of Beach Boy fans and many others will join for a 5k walk around Griffith Park's Lake Hollywood to benefit the American Cancer Society. Open to the public, the 1st Annual Carl Wilson Walk Against Cancer is the first in a day full of events honoring the late Beach Boy who lost his fight with cancer earlier this year. Initiative chair Rob Reiner and other Prop 10 supporters will join the walkers at Griffith Park at 9:00 am for a star-studded opening ceremony. Californians will have a chance to cast their votes for Prop 10, The California Children and Families Act, in November's election.
A silent auction immediately follows the Walk-A-Thon at Lake Hollywood where participants will have the opportunity to bid on items donated by celebrities including: Brian Wilson, Tom Petty, Elton John, David Letterman, Paul Schaffer, Olivia Newton-John and Christopher Cross. Donated items include autographed posters and CD's, videos, and photographs. Fans will also be able to bid on-line for additional items at: http://members.aol.com/saskanes/walk.html.
The day's activities are co-sponsored by Proposition 10, which will fund new childrens health care and smoking prevention programs by adding an additional 50 cents per pack tax to cigarettes. Invited Proposition 10 supporters include Michael Ovitz, Carl Reiner, Bob Daly (Co-CEO Warner Bros.), Frank Biondi (MCA) and political figures Sen. Barbara Boxer, Mayor Richard Riordan, Mayor Willie Brown, Fmr. Rep. Michael Huffington, California State Senators Tom Hayden and Diane Watson and Fmr. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop.
The revenue from Proposition 10 will be used to promote and create programs ranging from early childhood development, community-based family support programs and aid for pregnant women and mothers of small children to quit smoking to child immunizations, treatment for drug and alcohol addicted children and domestic violence intervention, prevention and treatment. It will also create new programs to help pregnant women and young parents stop smoking. Proposition 10, which is currently leading in the polls, is also supported by the American Cancer Society.
Following the Walk-a-Thon and Silent Auction is a sold-out concert at the Roxy featuring Beach Boy vocalist, Al Jardine, Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson), and Justyn and Carl B. Wilson (son and nephew of Carl, respectively) as part of an all-star line up produced to pay tribute to Carl Wilson. They will join a group of musical artists that include Joe Walsh, Robert Lamm (Chicago), Jeff (Skunk) Baxter (Doobie Brothers), Van Dyke Parks and actor John Stamos; all of whom will appear at the $100 a seat event which will also raise money for the American Cancer Society in Memory of Carl Wilson.
The Carl Wilson Tribute is the first annual event honoring the Beach Boy legend who founded the band with brothers Brian and Dennis, cousin Mike Love and friend, Al Jardine in 1961. During his 36 year career, Carl released two solo albums in addition to recording over 300 songs with The Beach Boys. Carl lost his fight with cancer on February 6, 1998 at the age of 51. Adored by fans worldwide, he is survived by his wife Gina and sons, Jonah and Justyn.
