To Honor Beach Boy Carl Wilson
At First Annual Tribute
American Cancer Society to BenefitLos Angeles, Ca, September 28, 1998 ~ Beach Boy vocalist, Al Jardine, Carnie and Wendy Wilson (daughters of Brian Wilson), Justyn and Carl B. Wilson (son and nephew of Carl, respectively) and many others will perform at The Roxy on the evening of October 18th as part of an all-star line up produced to pay tribute to the late Carl Wilson, who passed away from cancer last February. They will join a group of musical artists that include Joe Walsh (Eagles), Robert Lamm (Chicago), Jeff (Skunk) Baxter (Doobie Brothers), Van Dyke Parks and actor John Stamos; all of whom will appear at the $100 a seat event which will also raise money for the American Cancer Society in Memory of Carl Wilson. Each of the artists share special ties with the late Wilson, some collaborations of which include never released music expected to be performed for the first time at this first annual event.
Long time family member and former support musician for the Beach Boys, Billy Hinsche (of 60's pop group Dino, Desi and Billy) is producing the benefit concert. The day begins with a 5K Walk Against Cancer and silent auction at Lake Hollywood and autograph signing at Canter's Deli on Fairfax Avenue, organized by Betty Collignon, long time friend of Carl Wilson.
The evening will begin with the St. Agatha Choir and Billy Hinsche who will perform a song that Carl recorded for his 1982 Youngblood album titled"One More Night Alone." Hinsche will also perform a number with his former band mate Desi Arnaz Jr. Ricci Martin, the son of the late Dean Martin and the brother of Carl's widow, Gina will co-host the show and perform together with Christopher Cross.
The evening's performers will include Carnie and Wendy Wilson of The Wilson's who are scheduled to perform "God Only Knows" and"You Still Believe in Me." Emerging artist Michael Angeloff will perform one of his songs on which Carl collaborated. Bobby Figueroa, former Beach Boy drummer, will perform a selection from his new album with a full Latin band. His latest CD,"Canciones del Verano" (Songs of Summer), produced by Ricci Martin, features Beach Boy classics in Spanish.
The Honey's, who consist of Marilyn Wilson (Brian's first wife and mother of Carnie and Wendy), Diane Rovell (Marilyn's sister) and Ginger Blake, will continue with"I Can Hear Music" accompanied by Beach Boy drummer Mike Kowalski. Jeffrey Foskett (former Beach Boy band member) and Myrna Smith (formerly Elvis Presley's back-up vocalist) will perform"Hold Me," a song Carl and Myrna co-wrote. Geoffrey Cushing-Murray will perform"Goin' South," from The Beach Boy's 1979 LA Light album. Geofrey is noted for his writing collaborations with Carl and Dennis Wilson and John Cougar Mellencamp. Also appearing at the evening's performance are lyricist Van Dyke Parks and Joe Walsh of The Eagles.
John Stamos (Full House) will preside over the auction at The Roxy for Fender Musical Instruments and Gibson Guitars signed by all of the evenings' artists. Stamos has played guest drums with The Beach Boys for the last 12 years.
Concluding the concert will be performances by Chicago's Robert Lamm, Beach Boy Al Jardine, as well as Justyn Wilson, Carl B. Wilson and friend Mario Tucker, performing original material.
The Carl Wilson Tribute is the first annual event honoring the Beach Boy legend who founded the band with brothers Brian and Dennis, cousin Mike Love and friend, Al Jardine in 1961. During his 36 year career, Carl released two solo albums in addition to recording over 300 songs with The Beach Boys. Carl lost his fight with cancer on February 6, 1998 at the age of 51. Adored by fans worldwide, he is survived by his wife Gina and sons, Jonah and Justyn.
