Monterey Bay Aquarium Exhibit Inspires
Beach Boys To Resuscitate Their
“Don’t Fight The Sea” Project

Al Jardine to Visit Aquarium on Friday, March 14 at 1 P.M.

Monterey, CA, March 13, 1997 - - After reading about the new “Fishing for Solutions” exhibit scheduled to open this weekend at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Beach Boy Al Jardine decided it was time to resuscitate an unfinished “symphony” called “Don’t Fight the Sea.” The endeavor, started a few years ago as a project for The Beach Boys, is a story about the migration patterns of the gray whale. “It’s a ‘whaleagraphical’ account,” smiles Jardine, “of the condition of the ocean environment as seen through the eyes of the mammal as it migrates from Alaska to the Sea of Cortez.” Al will visit with his three sons, Matt (who tours with the band as percussionist and sings Brian Wilson’s falsetto parts) and his two younger children Drew and Robbie. They will be visiting executive director Julie Packard.at the aquarium this Friday at 1 p.m. to lend their support to the preservation of global fisheries.

“As I was reading an article in the Monterey Bay Herald, I realized that this was the first time the aquarium has exhibited fish as food, as opposed to pretty things to look at,” says Jardine from his Bay area ranch. We (The Beach Boys) feel that the fishing industry is putting undo stress on the natural ocean environment. Since The Beach Boys have always had an affection for the sea, I thought I’d follow-up to enlighten others about protecting an important part of the world: the Pacific Ocean.

Coincidentally, the song I wrote a few years ago, “Don’t Fight the Sea,” examines the condition of the ocean as seen through the eyes of a gray whale as it journeys south. We started on this a while ago, and I had almost put it up on a shelf, but the article reminded me to get going on it again. The aquarium’s new exhibit resonates with what the Beach Boys are all about. We wanted to blend some light and awareness into understanding the delicacy of the ocean. We support what the aquarium is doing to de-stress the water and coastal areas into more synergistic and natural environments.”

The Beach Boys have toured annually since the band was formed in 1961 by brothers, Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine. Currently, Brian Wilson performs at selected appearances and Matt Jardine, son of Al Jardine, represents the new generation of The Beach Boys and sings Brian’s falsetto vocals and

plays percussion. The classic songs and The Beach Boys’ harmonies embody the spirit of the California lifestyle to a worldwide audience. The Beach Boys’ first hit was in 1961 with the song “Surfin.” Their most recent album, recorded in 1996, was titled “Stars & Stripes” and features Beach Boys hits performed by country stars that range from Willie Nelson to Lorrie Morgan. The Beach Boys are members of the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame and throughout their careers, have been known for their philanthropic interests raising funds and awareness for organizations benefiting the environment, homeless, hunger, youth community services and substance abuse.
