Jurassic Park Retail Store

AAD was faced with the challenge of designing a highly themed, freestanding retail store for the newly opened Jurassic Park themed adventure ride at Universal Studios, Hollywood. Keeping in mind that the store needed to reflect the stone age elements of the movie and the ride, it was important that AAD’s design told a merchandising story in itself that didn’t duplicate the experience on the ride. The inspiration for the designers was to create a totally unique, 4800 square foot retail space that literally captured customers as they exited the ride and encouraged them to move through purchasing items that might illustrate experience.

AAD used an array of earthy colors and materials related to the movie, which manifested as fossilized walls, heavily stoned floors and overgrown jungle. AAD cut tantalizing “windows” into the exterior skin of the wall so that customers riding by could get a preview of the retail merchandise awaiting them. All of these elements successfully entice customers to explore the retail world of Jurassic Park and experience hands-on props – all themed from the movie and ride.

Of particular interest are the movie prop floor displays such as a scaled down jeep, stone aged multiple apparel SKUS, a raptor bone pedestal, which serves as focal point for apparel; the incubator display which doubles as a high ticket item display and a jungle tree that serves as backdrop for plush toys.

This project was completed and opened in June 1996.
